Hasui Kawase

Hey Grade 4s, I hope you are having a good Winter Break. This morning I was reading about a famous Japanese artist that I had never heard of. His name was Hasui Kawase and you can read a little more about his life here. Kawase was a woodblock artist and made a lot of landscape scenes like the two here.

They say that Kawase lost all of his artwork during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and everything that we can see today was made after that. What do you think of these scenes? What feelings or ideas do you think he was trying to tell us by painting these pictures?
